“Principles” by Ray Dalio and “Make your Bed” by William H. McRaven

Post Info

It’s been a couple of weeks now since I left my job to pursue new opportunities and take a new step in my career.

I had been with the company for 4 years, joining soon after I graduated from university.

During that time, I’ve cultivated many meaningful relationships with the people at the company. One of them was with my boss, Nick who has always given me great work and relationship advice and been so generous with his time.

We would always be the last two people at work talking about relationships, fitness and universal wisdoms and principles.

On my last day, I took him out for lunch as a gesture of appreciation of our time together. Just as we were about to leave the restaurant, he took out two books out of his bag and gave them to me.

  • “Make your Bed” by William H. McRaven

He then said, “The greatest gift you can give someone is the power to be successful. Giving people the opportunity to struggle rather than giving them the things they are struggling for will make them stronger.” Which was a quote from Ray Dalio.

Hence, he thought to give me these two books in hopes that they will be like a lighthouse to guide me on my new journey. Just like how these books have helped Nick throughout his life.

To say I was touched by this gesture is an understatement. I held my tears from cascading down my cheeks and thanked him for everything.

I will never forget his kindness, ongoing encouragement, and guidance throughout the many conversations we shared. Thank you for being an amazing boss, mentor, and friend, Nick.
