The Saint Laurent Cut-Out Bustier Dress

Saint Laurent Cut-Out Bustier Dress

Three words: Little. Black. Dress.

There is a reason why the LBD is considered one of the MVPs (most valuable possessions) for over 100 years. Going back to the days when Coco Chanel started the trend in the 1920s.

It’s simple, elegant, extremely versatile, and a classic. The ubiquity of an LBD is considered a must-have item for anyone’s wardrobe.

Although Coco might have introduced the trend, it was Audrey Hepburn who made the black Givency dress famous in the move, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.

Emily in Paris

Cut to 2022, for the 2nd season of the Netflix series “Emily in Paris” there were some notable looks onscreen that left the viewers stunned (at times befuddled…)

One of them was worn by the actress Camille Razat, who plays Camille in the show. In the first episode, Camille wore a black cut-out mini dress to see Mindy perform at a drag bar.

The moment the dress appeared on the screen; I gasped.

Even in the dark setting of bar, the black Saint Laurent dress was able to hook me into it’s existence. Not to mention there were other even crazier and more extravagant outfits at the bar. But there was no competition, the LBD was able to hold my attention the entire time.

A truly eye-catching structural LBD moment.

About the Garment

Saint Laurent is the indisputable master of the LBD.

The French fashion house has an illustrious history of drawing inspiration from modern art, as proven by this crêpe-georgette design’s expert corsetry and contoured silhouette.

In Saint Laurent’s signature hard-edged, feminine aesthetic, the mini dress is crafted from ruched georgette layered over satin.

It features a cut-out bustier neckline fitted with internal boning for added support, zip-fastening closure at back and silk lining.

The Spring/Summer 2020 was all about new necklines – as this runway-featured Saint Laurent dress demonstrates.

Blogger, Lauren Eggersten called it the negative space because it looks as if there is a “missing piece” to a puzzle or a large chunk cut out of the garments.

Hailey Baldwin previously wore the same dress in an Instagram post from January and Zoë Kravitz wore this dress on the cover of Elle’s February 2020 issue.

The Longer Version

There is also a floor length side slits version as seen here on the right.

Olivia Rodrigo wore this version of the dress at the Opening Gala for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in September.

While sporting the dress, all the ladies wore their hair pulled back as to not draw attention away from the plunging neckline, but they all accessorized a bit differently.

My Thoughts...

I do think it looks flattering on a bustier woman. Styled with gold hoped earrings and minimal accessories(bracelets and rings), no necklace to not compete with the bustier area, paired with a Stiletto Heeled Ankle Strap Sandals. Add a pair of stilettos and a sleek clutch to ooze after-dark glamour.

Or this Pvc Suede Heeled-sandals to match the curve, wavy design of the cutout bustier.

The sexiest dress of any season. As they say, you can never go wrong with a LBD.
